Cruel Intention Becomes Nexus Racing Club's First Stakes Winner

The final five-sixteenths of Saturday's Golden State Juvenile Stakes (Black-Type) at Santa Anita Park appeared to be a match race between Cruel Intention and Galilean, but Cruel Intention prevailed when it mattered most, claiming triumph by a neck. In doing so, the Smiling Tiger colt became Nexus Racing Club's first stakes winner.

In the $200,000 seven-furlong event for California-bred two-year-old colts and geldings, Cruel Intention—partnered with LNJ Foxwoods (Jaime Roth) and Jungle Racing (Jim Rome)—sat off the pace set by Galilean—owned by another Nexus partner in West Point Thoroughbreds. Two other horses, I Belong to Becky and Luck's Royal Flush, pressed the pace as well, but were soon overtaken by Cruel Intention and Galilean.

Cruel Intention drew even with Galilean around the turn, and the duel began. The pair drew off from the rest of the field, battling neck and neck down the stretch. But Cruel Intention dug deep, prevailing by a neck in the end in a final time of 1:22.82, to become a stakes winner in his second start and extending his record to 2-for-2.
